Heavy Duty Anti-Theft Tire Wheel Clamp Lock Review

I bought these back in June of 2012. It is now October 2012.

I bought these clamps because even though I had a TWO locks on the coupler of my cargo trailer, the thieves just lifted up my LOCKED trailer coupler and set it down over their trailer ball, and rolled away with it.

I originally only bought two of these to see if they would meet my needs. After I received them, I was so impressed with them, that I immediately bought three more... so, now I have five of them. I got them for $29.99 with free Prime shipping.... so that was a deal. These things are heavy, and shipping alone would have made the purchase prohibitive for me.

I put four of them on my dual axel boat trailer, and one on my single axel cargo trailer.

The one negative reviewer said the packaging was cheap, and he is absolutely correct (good thing I didn't buy it for the packaging! And, good thing I didn't need the packaging to protect my trailer!!). When I got them and saw the packaging, I thought "Oh, noooooo", but I could tell that the clamp was extremely sturdy, even with the cheapo packaging. Once I took it out of its packaging, I checked it out.

I tried the keys, and they slid in cleanly and securely... so, that was a good sign. Then, I tried the little rubber cap thingy. I agree that it is cheap, and probably not all that weather proof. I was able to get it to go on, but it took some playing with it until I got it to stay on. It is really poorly made, but then again, I looked at how the clamp goes on the tire and decided that since the lock itself is pointed downward, there is not a lot of likelihood that the lock would be filled with water or dirt.

The clamp fits perfect on my trailer tires. Perfectly. I have R14 tires on my boat trailer.

It was extremely easy to "install". It took just a couple of minutes for each one. I was very satisfied at the ease of use.

Now, it is about 4 months after I bought them... and I noticed that my driveway cement directly beneath each lock has a rust stain. It is right where the end of the handle is. I think what is happening is that when it rains, the handle fills up with water, rusting the inside of the handle, and eventually drips out. So, I think I will try drilling a small hole in the bottom of the red plastic at the end of the handles, so that any accumulated water can easily drip out, instead of sitting in the handle, causing it to rust.

The bright paint has oxidized quite a bit. And, the red rubber protective coating is starting to show some serious wear just from being exposed to the severe sun of the southwest.

The only thing that is unsecure about this clamp is that the tire itself is the only thing that gets clamped. If someone was really determined to steal your trailer, they could just remove the tire and replace it with another tire, then steal your trailer. So, you might want to consider getting lug nut locks, as well.

I am uploading some photos of what they look like today, 4 months after putting them on my trailers. I am also including a photo of a different kind of tire clamp that I already had and still use. It is made by Fulton and is called "Trailer Keeper". Reese also makes an identical one. This other clamp is pretty nifty. It actually connects to a lug nut, and when installed it prevents the lug nut from being removed. This clamp would prevent someone from removing the tire with the clamp on it and replacing it with a different time, in order to steal your trailer. With this clamp, you don't need separate lug nut locks. However, this clamp is MUCH more difficult to install initially, and is a pain in the butt to put back on after using your trailer because the tire has to be oriented just right in order to put the clamp back on. Why? Because of the little bracket that goes on the lug nut. In order to put the clamp back on, that bracket has to be in just the right spot, so if you park your trailer and your wheel ends up rotated with the bracket at the top of the rim, then you can't get the clamp on. Pain in butt.

BOTTOM LINE: I highly recommend these clamps. (Suggestion: I would drill out the rubber on the handle to allow water to escape from the handle if you live in an area where it rains or where the clamp is exposed to water.)
